The Reconciliation of Indigenous Culture

SOCHUM is the Third Committee of the General Assembly that is dedicated to resolving social, humanitarian, and cultural issues around the world. More specifically, the committee addresses issues that concern human rights, asylum seekers, global literacy, global crime prevention, and discrimination of any kind. Like other general assemblies, SOCHUM can only produce non-binding resolutions, meaning that the committee has no jurisdiction on whether or not these resolutions can be enforced. Instead, the resolutions are merely recommendations. Consequently, SOCHUM works closely with other UN bodies in order to effectively fight against injustice.

Alex Oh

Alex is an unusually short senior at RE Mountain Secondary School who has a passion for MUN, debate, and fashion. After attending his first conference in grade 8, he has enjoyed every moment and opportunity that MUN has presented to him. Not only has MUN helped further his passion for public speaking, but it has also given him the opportunity to expand his knowledge and understanding of current international events. When Alex is not attending MUN conferences, case competitions, and debate invitationals, he is found stress eating, getting over girls and full sending it with the boys. As the Chair of the SOCHUM committee, Alex is looking forward to meeting everyone in March.

Andrew Liu

Andrew is a senior at Pacific Academy and is absolutely grateful for the opportunity to staff at SOCHUM in this year’s iteration of CYDCMUN. As a participant of Model UN since grade 8, he hopes to inspire a similar fervour towards purposeful debate that he experienced from his first conference, in all of his delegates. In his spare time, he enjoys lounging on the couch in comfortable pajamas, learning new recipes from YouTube, and watching the sun rise with his dog. Recognizing that SOCHUM will be welcoming many new delegates, Andrew encourages delegates to not hesitate if they have any questions or inquiries about the topic or conference directly via email. Andrew can not wait to welcome all of the delegates to CYDCMUN 2019!

Janette Kim

Janette is a senior at Pacific Academy and is ecstatic to serve as the Chair of SOCHUM at CYDCMUN 2019. Enthralled by world events and diplomacy, Janette has attended Model United Nations conferences since Grade 9. Although once a shy, unconfident 14 year old, Janette has grown to recognize the impacts of public speaking and networking that MUN entails. Janette believes that MUN is not only a platform that allows participants to broaden their perspective of the world, but also helps develop rhetoric and critical thinking skills. During her free time, one can see Janette exploring Greater Vancouver’s food industry, impulsively shopping, and going out to meet her friends. Janette hopes that CYDCMUN 2019 is filled with intense debate, collaboration, and communication.
